Skaneateles Summer Theater presents “The Music Man”

Skaneateles, NY – (July 23^rd, 2010) Skaneateles Summer Theater will present their summertime performance of Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” on August 5^th, 6^th and 7^th at 7:30 p.m. at Skaneateles High School.  There will also be a matinee at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 7^th. 

With a talented cast of over sixty and a sweet-sounding orchestra, “The Music Man” is sure to strike a chord with its audience.  The plot involves the lovable con man Harold Hill, who poses as a kids' band organizer and sells band instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk before skipping town with the cash. In River City, Iowa, prim Marian the librarian sees through him, but when Hill helps her younger brother, Marian falls in love with him. The traveling salesman, Harold, get’s his own foot “caught in the door” falling for Marian and risks everything to win her.  This valentine of a musical is set in a simpler time and place and features such memorable tunes as: “Ya Got Trouble”, “Goodnight, My Someone”, “Wells Fargo Wagon”, “Lida Rose” and the show stopping “76 Trombones”.The production features a large cast of talented actors, many of whom are local to this area.
In its 11^th year of operation, Skaneateles Summer Theater is a community-based theater troupe drawing its cast and crew from talented individuals throughout the region. Skaneateles Summer Theater strives to raise the quality of life in the local community by providing top quality, affordable musical theater performances for all ages. Auburn's Act II: Becoming a hotbed for musical theater | syracuse.com

Auburn, NY - Auburn, a former industrial powerhouse long in search of a new identity, is betting on song and dance.

Tucked into the state’s recently passed budget bills is $2.4 million for construction of a performance and education center in downtown Auburn. While Gov. David Paterson vetoed $57 million in community college operating expenses around the state, funding for Auburn’s theater remained.

The $4.8 million performance center would be part of Cayuga Community College. It would be used summers for the festival and during the school year for theater classes and training.

The 384-seat performance center would be a key piece of a grand plan — a summer-long Musical Theater Festival on four stages, built on the success of Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. In recent years, Merry-Go-Round, which as a professional theater has been producing traditional musicals for 35 years, has expanded its season to 22 weeks, with annual attendance exceeding 60,000.

Organizers are aiming for the success of other summer theater festivals, notably the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, and the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario.

As regional economic development ideas go, this one has unusual traction and support. The festival has raised at least $3 million of its $12 million goal, most coming from local foundations. For several years, the city of Auburn and Cayuga County have each contributed $25,000 toward the festival.

A key force has been the Stardust Foundation of Central New York, established in 2007 by Jerry Bisgrove, an Auburn native who funds it with money from his Arizona-based Stardust Foundation.

Bisgrove’s father, John Bisgrove Sr., started Red Star Express Lines in Auburn in 1932. The company grew to a fleet of 2,000 trucks before the Bisgroves sold it in the 1980s. In Arizona, Jerry Bisgrove multiplied his money in real estate.

Stardust of CNY and the Emerson Foundation, also based in Auburn, have each pledged $1 million over four years to get the festival off the ground. The Schwartz Foundation, founded by the family of former Mayor Maurice Schwartz, has pledged $500,000.

The festival team has a paid staff of three, headed by Michael Chamberlain, a former Xerox executive. Fifteen years ago, as president of the Auburn Community Baseball board, he successfully led the campaign to raise $3.5 million to build a new ballpark for Auburn’s minor league baseball team.

“It’s the right idea, in the right place, in the right time,” said Ed Sayles, the festival’s artistic director and producing director of Merry-Go-Round Playhouse.

The Central New York Alternative, Local Bands & Events Calendar - Sammys 2010 Gears Up

This October will be more like Rocktober when the Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammys) will be handed out during a gala ceremony slated for Friday, Oct. 8, 7 to 10 p.m., at the Pirro Convention Center, 800 S. State St. The Sammys board of directors, headed by board president Liz Nowak, revealed that tidbit along with other noteworthy news during a press conference held July 13 at the center.

The Sammys will be part of a wide-ranging weekend at the Pirro Center, which will also host the MIC: Meet, Interact, Connect networking trade show filled with clinics, conferences and keynoters. The two-day confab, on Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 9, will encourage bands and musicians of a cutting-edge nature to gather alongside professionals from the music industry. According to the press release, “MIC strives to serve as a launch pad for intellectual and creative networking, as well as to nurture career growth and to contribute to building professional relationships.”

Part of the MIC will be providing information to aspiring musicians about career opportunities and programs of study. Local colleges and universities that offer a music industry program, such as Syracuse University, Oneonta, Ithaca College and Morrisville, have been invited to participate and discuss their respective curricula with prospective students. 

Music showcases will also proliferate throughout the city during the weekend, with announced venues such as The Redhouse, 201 S. West St.; Half-Penny Pub, 321 W. Fayette St.; and the lobby of the Landmark Theatre, 362 S. Salina St. Bands wishing to perform during the weekend have until Aug. 10 to enter; visit www.micnys.com for details.

The MIC festival will climax with a Saturday performance inside the convention center’s ballroom with keynote speaker Max Weinberg, known for his many years as drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band as well as his 17-year stint as bandleader for Late Night with Conan O’Brien and the short-lived The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. Also lending his valuable expertise at MIC is Bob Lefsetz, a music-biz insider who has lots of opinions and isn’t afraid to dish them out. Other speakers include Central New York Jazz Arts Foundation executive director Larry Luttinger, Landmark executive director Denise DiRienzo, Salt City music veterans Mark Doyle, Bob Halligan and Frank Briggs and National Audio owner Mark Gummer.

Linking the maiden MIC voyage to the Sammys mothership should no doubt help both vehicles flourish, as local musicmakers get to hobnob with industry heavyweights. The Sammys weekend begins with a Hall of Fame reception scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 7, at the Upstairs at the Dino venue of the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, 246 W. Willow St. More details for this invitation-only celebration will be announced soon, with nominees to be revealed on Sept. 14. 

To have a Sammys show, however, musicians have to get their CDs in to the judges for consideration. Two county employees, including real property tax director, charged by sheriff's office

Cayuga County Real Property Tax Services Director Alan Kozlowski and one of his employees were arrested Wednesday by the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office for their alleged involvement in illegal payments for data input.

Kozlowski, 62, of Auburn, and Tammy Morehouse Schramm, 36, of Weedsport, each face two misdemeanor charges of receiving unlawful gratuities after a two-week investigation by the sheriff's office determined they accepted payment for work while on county time, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

"As public servants, they're not allowed to accept payment for what they're supposed to be doing," said District Attorney Jon Budelmann.

Kozlowski is accused of twice arranging for a town assessor to pay Schramm to input the assessor's assessment data into the county's computer system during her work day with the county, according to the sheriff's office. Findings from the sheriff's investigation do not suggest Kozlowski accepted any money.

Kozlowski, who earns $59,956, has been on paid leave since June 11.

Schramm is accused of accepting cash payments from the assessor on April 8 and April 27. Schramm works for the county as a supervising real property tax specialist.

The sheriff's report says another employee was offered the same arrangement, but declined.

Authorities have not identified the town assessor involved in the incident.

The amount of money Schramm received on each occasion has also been withheld, but is a "relatively small amount," said Lt. Joseph Weeks, of sheriff's office.

County Administrator Thomas Squires and Chair of the Legislature Peter Tortorici did not return calls for comment Wednesday.

The investigation is ongoing and the sheriff has asked anyone with information to call Lt. Weeks, 253-3902.

The Citizen reported today that the case involving Kozlowski had been placed with the Sheriff's Office.

No magic needed to enjoy butterbeer at home

No need to travel to Hogsmeade (or to Universal Orlando) to get a taste of Harry Potter's butterbeer. We've created an easy version of the formerly fictional drink made famous by the young wizard.

BUTTERBEER

Start to finish: 1 hour (10 minutes active)

Servings: 4

1 cup light or dark brown sugar

2 tablespoons water

6 tablespoon butter

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar

3/4 cup heavy cream, divided

1/2 teaspoon rum extract

Four 12-ounce bottles cream soda

In a small saucepan over medium, combine the brown sugar and water. Bring to a gentle boil and cook, stirring often, until the mixture reads 240 F on a candy thermometer.

Stir in the butter, salt, vinegar and 1/4 heavy cream. Set aside to cool to room temperature.

Once the mixture has cooled, stir in the rum extract.

In a medium bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar mixture and the remaining 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Use an electric mixer to beat until just thickened, but not completely whipped, about 2 to 3 minutes.

To serve, divide the brown sugar mixture between 4 tall glasses (about 1/4 cup for each glass). Add 1/4 cup of cream soda to each glass, then stir to combine. Fill each glass nearly to the top with additional cream soda, then spoon the whipped topping over each.

Pit bull attacks Auburn police sergeant | syracuse.com

Auburn, NY -- An Auburn police officer needed three sets of stitches to close wounds he sustained when he was attacked Sunday night by a pit bull dog, a police spokesman said.

Sgt. Edward Fabrize was patrolling about 7:52 p.m. when he noticed heavy smoke and walked up a driveway at 61 E. Genesee St. to investigate, Lt. Shawn Butler said. There Fabrize found Thomas Stoddard sitting next to a fire pit. As they spoke, a large pit bull ran off the side porch of the home, snapping his leash in the process, and attacked Fabrize, Butler said.

Fabrize could not defend himself with his service gun because Stoddard was standing too close, Butler said. Fabrize was injured on his right arm and upper right leg before Stoddard was able to pull the dog off the officer and put it in the house, the spokesman said.

Butler said Fabrize suffered muscle damage to his right arm and is expected to be out of work for an undetermined period while he recovers.

Police learned later that Stoddard was tending the dog for a family member. The Auburn animal control officer is continuing the investigation, Butler said.

Auburn police report that witnesses saw a man clinging to a ladder between cars of a Finger Lakes Railway train around 12:30 p.m. The man lost his grip, witnesses said, and fell face first onto the east side of the tracks behind 134 State St.

Legislature OKs raising cigarette tax $1.60 to U.S. high $4.35 A PACK!

The Legislature on Monday night narrowly approved boosting the state's tax on cigarettes by an additional $1.60 - to a national-high $4.35 a pack. Factoring in city and federal levies, a single pack is taxed to the tune of $6.85, which translates to a counter price of $12 - $13 for New York City smokers.

The tax hike came as part of an emergency spending plan to keep New York government running for another week.

Pols now have seven days to cut a deal on a permanent budget, or risk Gov. Paterson putting a year's worth of spending - and painful education cuts - into an emergency must-pass plan.

The new tobacco levy will also drive up the tax charged on cigars and chewing tobacco to 75% of its wholesale price - a 29% jump.

"We are going to collect revenue and ensure that young people don't have access to cheap smokes," said Senate Deputy Majority Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx).

The new tobacco taxes will raise an estimated $290 million to help plug the state's $9.2 billion deficit, according to Paterson's budget office.

The emergency bills also include $150 million from the collection of taxes on cigarettes sold on Indian reservations, setting up a likely court battle with the Indian tribes.

Republicans slammed Democrats for being tax-happy.

"This is just a prelude of what you are going to see in the big ugly," said Deputy Minority Leader Thomas Libous (R-Binghamton.) "You are going to see spending and taxes, everything that you shouldn't do in this economy."

Health advocates praised the higher tax, which is well ahead of the $3.46 charged by No. 2 Rhode Island, saying it will make it too costly for many people to smoke.

"They are going to see well over 100,000 adults who will quit smoking because of this," said the American Heart Association's Julie Hart.

By including the new taxes in his emergency bills, Paterson effectively dared the Legislature to approve them - or shut down the government.

Paterson gave lawmakers until Monday to reach a final spending plan - 83 days late - before he puts the rest of his proposed cuts in emergency legislation - immediately raising the prospect of an unprecedented government shutdown.

"We shall wait to see what next week brings," said state Sen. Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx).

Lawmakers reported progress on a permanent spending plan, saying they've agreed to about 70% of what Paterson wants - but they haven't reached a consensus on controversial education cuts.

"I think we can have a deal in the next week," Klein said.

Auburn, NY - The elementary school teacher who admitted taking students' lunches could be going to trial.

Alan Robinson rejected plea deals that could threaten his teaching license.

His lawyer plans to argue what he did was not criminal.

Police disagree, saying Robinson had students use their personal ID numbers to buy a school lunch, and then bring it to his class for him. He allegedly had no Intention of paying for it.

Auburn police union, chief end ticket 'quota' dispute | syracuse.com

Auburn, NY -- The labor dispute between the Auburn Police Department union and Police Chief Gary Giannotta over officers being disciplined for not writing enough tickets has ended for now, the union president said today.

The two sides discussed the union’s grievance against Giannotta in a closed hearing before city attorney John Rossi. The hearing lasted for about an hour and Rossi did not render a decision.

Founders Day parking basically unchanged

Founders Day organizers said they aren’t fixing what’s not broken when it comes to event parking.

With plans in their final stages leading up to this Saturday’s downtown festivities, organizers are saying the parking opportunities will be similar to last year.

Parking will be limited and restricted in the direct downtown area, and visitors will be encouraged to park at off-site locations and take shuttles to the parade and street fair.

Genesee Street will once again be closed for the day between the William Street and North-South street intersections.

The Founders Day parade will begin at 11 a.m., proceeding this year to city hall from West Middle School instead of from East Genesee Street. After the parade, public addresses will take place in front of city hall.

The public parking lot on the north end of South Street across from city hall will be closed all day, as will the city lot on Dill Street.

The lot adjacent to city hall and the downtown parking garage will close from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. That means anyone looking to park in either location should arrive early and expect to stay a while.

Organizers are encouraging visitors to park in one of three lots: by the Holiday Inn on North Street, Auburn High School on Lake Avenue and Cayuga Community College on Franklin Street. Centro will offer free shuttles from all three lots to the Founders Day site and back. Shuttles will also run to and from the Cayuga Museum and Case Mansion, which will be open for public tours.

The parking setup is similar to last year’s first festival, which drew thousands of people to downtown Auburn.

Auburn Police Chief Gary Giannotta said Thursday that there were no major parking issues surrounding last year’s festival.

“Everything seemed to flow very well. There were no problems,” Giannotta said. “If it worked last year with somebody like Sarah Palin, it will most likely work this year.”

Palin was last year’s special guest speaker and was governor of Alaska at the time. The first Founders Day theme was one-time Auburnian William Seward and his role in the purchase of the Alaskan territory, which took place when he was secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson.

Each Founders Day theme is expected to change to another important aspect of Auburn’s history. This year’s theme is Theodore Case and his development of a method that put sound on film in 1916.

The special guests include Oscar-nominated actress Sigourney Weaver and Case’s grandson, Ted Case III, who is a writer and professional speaker. Activities throughout the day will celebrate Case and the history of American film.

Auburn IDA OKs hotel tax breaks

At approximately 11:30 a.m. today, the Auburn Industrial Development Authority voted 7-2 in favor of a revised financial assistance package for a proposed downtown hotel.

The authority considered financial incentives that include a 25-year agreement that would freeze the property assessment for 15 years. The developer, Pioneer Companies, had originally asked for a 25-year freeze.

The agreement for payment in lieu of taxes, also known as a PILOT agreement, includes a number of new terms from the original request.

The property will be assessed at $882,000 for 15 years, with the owners paying taxes on that value. In year 16, the assessment jumps to $7.5 million, and Pioneer would pay taxes at 12 percent of that total. The percentage would gradually increase until reaching 100 percent at year 26.

The PILOT also includes a seven-year recapture clause that would force the developer to pay back the difference between the property's full, taxable value and what they paid through the PILOT up until the point when they sell it.

Matt Smith and William Graney, who are also Auburn city councilors, delivered the two "no" votes.

That could complicate the issue moving forward, as the developer is undertaking the project with the understanding that the city of Auburn build will a public parking lot across the street and sell them the small stretch of Water Street that cuts through the hotel site.

Both of those actions could require four votes from the five-member city council.

The AIDA board rejected a similar proposal last month in a 5-4 vote. At that time, the board also rejected a request by the developer, Pioneer Companies, to use eminent domain if they couldn't reach agreements with three property owners at the site.

Now, all three of the holdout property owners, located at the corner of Water and State streets, have since reached agreements with Pioneer.

Auburn Public Theater’s 5th annual Summer Children’s Theater Workshopis one of Central New York’s newest summer theater programs. It will give aspiring young actors a taste of life behind the scenes--and in the spotlight--of a musical theatrical production based on a brand new musical production, “ALMOST ASTRONAUTS, 13 Women Who Dared to Dream." From creating costumes and scenery to playing major roles on stage, young people from the local community will have the opportunity to spend four weeks this summer pursuing their passion for drama led by the gifted actor/director/producer, Carey Eidel.

For the first three weeks (M, W, F), the program will include both acting classes and rehearsals for “ALMOST ASTRONAUTS, 13 Women Who Dared to Dream,” our final show. The fourth week will include dress and technical rehearsals for the show on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday with performances on Friday and Saturday.

This program is supported in part by The Women's Fund of Central New York and with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, which is administered locally by Phelps Arts Center.

SSF concludes its 3^rd indoor season with a lively one-woman show told from the perspective of Shakespeare’s wife. Nora O’Dea stars in the company’s debut at the Setnor Auditorium, Crouse College, on the SU Campus. Free parking is available in the Q1 lot on campus right in front of the building. Show times are Friday, 6/11 and Saturday, 6/12 @ 7:30 pm and Sunday, 6/13 for the only matinee show @ 2 pm. The final two performances are Fri. & Sat., 6/18 & 19 @ 7:30 pm.

Tickets are reasonably priced @ $10 each for the general public, $5 for SU students with current ID, $7.50 for SU faculty and staff with current ID and $5 each for groups of 12 or more when the tickets are purchased at one time. Plastics News - Currier adds stretch blow molding machines

AUBURN, N.Y. (May 28, 10:30 a.m. ET) -- Currier Plastics Inc. is adding two new Aoki Direct Heatcon injection stretch blow molding machines to its plant.

The custom injection molder and extrusion blow molder in Auburn bought the machines to support new business and growth opportunities.

“Having the ability to now offer this technology to our customers has been on our wish list for quite some time,” Steve Valentino, blow molding manager, said in a recent news release. According to the release, Currier spent $1.1 million on the new machinery. The firm selected Aoki machines because they offer a one-step, three-station molding process.

According to the release, the new molding process addresses market sustainability concerns and can also use 100 percent recycled PET.

Currier was founded in 1982 as a close-tolerance injection molder and operates 23 injection presses with clamping forces of 20-500 tons, as well as 12 blow molding machines.

School district employee gets jail time for molesting student - WCAX.COM Local Vermont News, Weather and Sports-

AUBURN, N.Y. (AP) - A Cayuga County judge sentenced a former Oswego school district employee to 10 years of probation and 75 days in jail for molesting a student, but said he felt the punishment was too lenient.

Judge Mark Fandrich said he only agreed to Darrell Peckham's pre-arranged sentence because the victim had agreed to it to avoid a trial.

Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann said Peckham, of Weedsport, sexually abused the boy from the time he was in fourth grade until he was in eighth grade. Peckham played basketball with the victim and took him to Syracuse University games in an attempt to "groom" the child.

When given a chance to address the court, the victim struggled to keep his composure as he recounted how the sexual abuse damaged his life.

Peckham apologized to the victim in court. Peckham was a social worker with the Oswego school district from 1981 to 1992.
