Amusement Business magazine folds

Trade publications have been hit hard by the Internet. For most of its 111-year existence, Amusement Business was the only publication exclusively covering theme and amusement parks. Today, that's no longer the case, with dozens of prominent sites covering the industry, including this one. Amusement Business, along with other VNU publications, tried to enhance its appeal with a more frequently-updated website. But its content stood behind a paid registration wall, crippling the publication's visibility online and preventing it from attracting new readers.
Still, I'll miss AB, and I'll be curious to see who picks up the task of the year-end attendance estimates.

VNU Nixs AB

Link: Amusement Business closes its doors.

Dutch-based media company VNU has closed Amusement Business magazine.
The 111-year-old publication published its final issue in May. Today’s AB Daily News online edition is the last one.

VNU relaunched AB as a monthly in June 2004. A spokesman called the closing “a business decision.”

A state Supreme Court justice issued an order that allowed several amusement rides to operate at a fair to help disabled children, even though the state Labor Department shuttered the rides because of safety and insurance concerns.
State Labor Department inspectors were at the Cedarhurst event last week and said the operators didn't have the proper insurance nor had obtained the proper permits for four amusement rides at the fair at Cedarhurst Park, which is typically attended by more than 3,000 people.

The event was sponsored by the Kulanu Hebrew Academy, which serves about 360 developmentally disabled children in a variety of educational and social service programs, executive director Beth Raskin said.

In a highly unusual move, State Supreme Court Justice Thomas Phelan, in a handwritten order dated May 21, stopped the state department from enforcing its order and allowed the organization to run the rides at the event, which lasted one day.

Neither Phelan nor his law secretary returned phone calls, but the county's top jurist, Administrative Judge Anthony Marano, said he has faith that Phelan acted properly. "I have confidence he did whatever he felt was right."

"They were unable to show insurance and didn't have permits," Labor Department spokesman Rob Lillpopp said. "We issued violations and gave them a written violation and ordered them not to open the rides."

Lillpopp said the two companies were from New Jersey, but the fair's organizers identified the ride operators as Amazing Amusements from Brooklyn. The company's owner, David Zaitschek, said he subcontracted with a New Jersey company to provide the rides. He said the company was in fact "licensed and insured through the roof" in New Jersey, and New York inspectors could have conducted an on-site inspection to determine their safety.
