We said we needed it. We just didn't expect this much rain. Salem got hit hard Tuesday night and with the fair set to open thursday. Don Deggeller was worried he owns the fair.
"The river was just about ready to overflow its banks."
Now this field is where they stored most of the equipment. As you can see, the heavy rain really muddied up the field. Their worry was that it would actually flood the equipment so it took some quick thinking Tuesday night to make sure that didn't happen.
"They said sometimes, there's two to three feet of water there, which we couldn't get the equipment off if that happened. It would have probably ruined the equipment."
Which would have meant no fair.
"So we went down there to get our equipment and it was raining, it was so muddy that it was really hard to get it off."
They did, but the rain set them back nearly four hours.
"We worked till about 4 o'clock this morning putting equipment up."
Opening day and they're still working. Unusual, but don doesn't expect any problems and he says neither should you.
