Remember going to the fair as a kid? Candied apples, popcorn, and all those fun rides. Well, the fun didn't end there. Just as the weather is cooling down, the fair is rolling into Albany. Maybe it's the spot of your favorite childhood memories, the fall fair. Here's your chance to make a few more. "Normally if we pull into town, it takes us about 36 hours to set up completely, because we get in here early, we've had a lot of time to wash and clean up and light and do what we need to do so we're kind of on a slow paced schedule." Slow paced now, but not for long. It's sure to turn into a fast moving mania, with even more fun planned for this year than ever before. Director of Operations, John Strates, says, "Yeah, we've got probably a few more than we normally have and got a couple new ones coming in. New rides, we've got a 'freak out' coming in and a 'rock-n-roll'. A couple of new pieces you've never seen here in Albany."

ADVERTISEMENT The Larimer County Fair Board, Extension 4-H Agents, and the County Extension director will host an open house to get ideas on how to build on the successes of the 2006 county fair in order to make the 2007 county fair even better. The open house will from 6 to 8 p.m., Nov. 8, at the Thomas M. McKee 4-H, Youth and Community Building at The Ranch, I-25 and Crossroads Boulevard in Loveland. Organizers hope to draw 4-H families, open class exhibitors, county fair volunteers, everyone who is interested in next year’s county fair. The event will begin with a 40-minute tour-orientation for building users at 6 p.m. by fairgrounds event coordinators. Following that, attendees can meet with Fair Board members, Extension 4-H Agents, the County Extension director, and a representative from the commissioners’ office about their ideas for building on the successes of the 2006 county fair. When the Louisiana State Fair first started in 1906, they probably didn't have Pizza on a Stick or Fried Pie. But as time went by, not only did the food get more advanced but the attractions and traditions changed as well. "From year to year we try to change the carnival midway so people don't see the same thing every year," said State Fair President Chris Giordano. One change fair-goers will see are more police patrolling the midway and police keeping an eye on the parking lot. "It makes me feel real safe because I have kids of my own. I have grandkids and my nephews, we all come out every year and it's a big difference. I see a big change," said Fair-goer Wanda Darby Although there have been plenty of changes within the past 100 years, one of the more notable changes is the size of the Ferris Wheel. "I noticed that as soon as I walked in, that they don't have the big one like they had last year," said one patron. "They shouldn't have taken it down ... because the fair and Ferris Wheel just go together," said Amanda Byrd.

Coastal Carolina has good run

Ladies and gentlemen, the Coastal Carolina 2006 Fair and Expo has ended its 10-day run, and organizers and attendees say the event was more than “fair.” “It was very good,” said Kellie King, chairman of the Craven County Jaycees. She had no estimate on how much money was made for charity but she did say 6,000 people attended Saturday. She said attendance was a little under last year because of rainy weather.
