Fight not over for ND State Fair

Minot area legislators aren’t the only ones disappointed in the actions of the House Appropriations Committee this week. The committee slashed a pair of requests for money for the North Dakota State Fair. An original appropriation of $5 million to help fund a new grandstand was completely eliminated, while a request for money to make blacktop repairs was reduced to less than half the original amount, down to $265,000. The fight for the money – especially the grandstand funding – certainly isn’t over yet. This was but one step in the process, albeit an important step. Area lawmakers such as Rep. Larry Bellew, R-Minot, were not happy with the decisions, but also know that there are more chances to get the funding reinstated. The grandstand funding will certainly be addressed in the Senate, and if that fails, the issue could go into a conference committee. Needless to say, we’re disappointed the funding for the grandstand project was completely stripped by the House Appropriations Committee. We fully expect our area legislators to get that funding restored before the session ends. It is, after all, the North Dakota State Fair, so improvements such as a new grandstand and improved parking lots should be paid for with state money.

Country music star Jake Owen, whose hits include "Yee Haw," "8-Second Ride" and "Startin' With Me," will headline the 102nd McKean County Fair with one show at 8 p.m. Aug. 18. Advance ticket sale information is available by contacting Pat Lord in Smethport. Less than three years after arriving in Nashville with a truck load of dreams and songs, Owen released his debut album, "Startin' With Me" in July 2006. Among the album's many songs was his Top 20 single, "Yee Haw," which continued to move up the country singles charts.

Collier County Fair officials said today they again will offer the popular advance sale MegaPass Ticket for the fair, which opens Friday and continues through Feb. 11. The advance sale MegaPass ticket enables fairgoers to choose a day of their choice to ride all the rides on the midway that day for the set price. The MegaPass is available only prior to the opening day and costs $18 to gain admission to the grounds and ride the rides. Advance sale MegaPases will be available from Walgreens stores, Florida Community Banks, Doug’s Buy Rite, Mr. G’s Country stores and at the fairgrounds until Friday. “With the offering of the advance sale MegaPass Ticket we feel that when it comes to enjoying Southwest Florida’s most outstanding county fair and our outstanding carnival midway rides we have provided a new level of customer friendly flexibility and value to our fairgoers,” Fair Manager Vonda Welky said in a prepared release. The fairgrounds can be reached off Immokalee Road to 39th Avenue N.E. The fair offers Mighty Bluegrass Shows and more than 80 rides, games and attractions along with fair food, traditional 4-H exhibits and more. Fairgoers will see something that Gladwin County hasn’t seen in 30 years or more, the 2007 Gladwin County Fair will move to June 18-23. At least since 1976 the fair has been in July, said Joanne Varner, Gladwin County Fair office secretary. Story Continues Below On Dec. 19 the fair board was notified that AJ Carl Co., the company that supplied the carnival for the fair, was going out of business – at least in Michigan. Varner said that the fair board had some trouble finding another amusement company that fit Gladwin County’s needs. “We needed a carnival that’d be about the same size and for a full week,” she said. “Some offered the carnival for a few days or less rides.” Elliott Amusements of Mason will supply the carnival for the fair this year. Varner said it is the same company that supplied the carnival four years ago, before AJ Carl Co. “There are carnivals that won’t come to our fair because they’re too big and some were too small,” Varner said. “There are four carnivals that were our size, but were booked on our dates.
