Cal Expo officials want thoroughbreds back, and they're willing to gamble on getting more than two weeks of racing at the State Fair. Bay Meadows' announcement last week that it will close permanently in November has launched a free-for-all among fair tracks -- including Cal Expo -- that hope to grab its 120 horse-racing dates for 2008. This could mean a farewell to harness racing at the Sacramento venue, which has been that sport's sole California address for seven years.
