A woman killed last night at Playland Amusement Park was a park employee taking a break from her duties operating the ride on which she was killed, Westchester County officials said this morn ing. Gabriela Garin of White Plains, 21, had worked at the county-owned park since she was 14, oficials said, and was working at the Mind Scrambler ride when a 7-year-old girl was killed on it in 2004. Garin, who had been running the ride last night, switched duties with the ticket taker for one cycle, officials said, and climbed aboard with other patrons for a ride about 9:30 p.m. She got into a seat without securing her safety belt and was thrown from the fast-spinning, indoor ride, County Executive Andy Spano said, citing eyewitness reports. "This is a very bright young lady," Spano told reporters at a morning news conference inside the park. "This behavior is inconsistent with what everyone knows about her." The operator, another experienced employee who had checked earler to see that the other riders were securely belted in, could not see that Garin was not securely in her seat, officials said. Clear Lake’s Fourth of July celebration kicked off Friday evening with music in City Park and Evans United Shows on the midway. The screams of carnival thrill seekers could be heard above the music of Rubber Soul, a Beatles tribute band playing in the bandshell. Hundreds of people filled park benches and lawn chairs to enjoy the show. The carnival opens at noon each day until Friday, July 6.

Investigators were re-examining a gyrating ride at a historic amusement park after a young woman died in the second fatal accident in less than four years, the fourth death at the park in that span. The woman was killed Friday night on the Mind Scrambler at Playland Amusement Park in Rye, N.Y., just north of New York City, Westchester County Police spokesman Kieran O'Leary said. Emergency workers responded quickly, ``but there wasn't very much anybody could do for her,'' O'Leary said. The woman, who was in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene around 9:30 p.m., he said. Police were investigating early Saturday and released few details about the accident. The woman's name was not released because her family had not been notified. The indoor attraction spins riders around in a darkened tent with flashing lights. It was the scene of another deadly accident May 22, 2004. Stephanie Dieudonne, 7, wriggled free of the restraining bar on one of the cars, knelt on the seat and fell soon after the ride started, according to investigators.
