Firemen's Carnival returns

For the first time in 12 years, the volunteer fire department will be bringing back its homecoming carnival. The four days of fire fighting festivities will be held from May 28-31, and will feature a parade on Saturday, May 31, followed by the Firemen’s Challenge. The carnival will be held from 5-10 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, giving residents an additional hour to have fun. Rides, games and food tents will be set on the 20th Street ball field outside Nicholson Stadium. Volunteer firefighter and carnival spokesperson Jamie McMahon said the initial response has been good, and he hopes the 2008 carnival will serve as foundation on which to build upon each year. “Everyone is glad to see it back,” said McMahon. “The fire department will also sell french fries, which have always been a tradition since I was a kid and my dad was a firefighter.” McMahon said a contract has been signed with Brown’s Amusement of Cortland, Ohio for sixteen rides, 12 games and seven food trailers. Letters will be sent to local businesses after the first of the year to inform them of the carnival and what they can do should they wish to help.

The Florida State Fair has won prizes - and it's not stuffed gorillas from the midway. The fair won four first-place Hall of Honor communications awards and two agricultural awards of excellence at the 117th annual International Association of Fairs and Expositions Convention in Las Vegas. There were more than 1,100 entries from around the world in these competitions, a release said. Fairs or expositions may enter among a total of 15 communication award categories and 13 agricultural award categories, each divided into five divisions by attendance. The entries are evaluated and judged by a team of industry leaders, the release said. Tractor and equipment company John Deere sponsored the agricultural awards and is an avid supporter of the fair and expo industry around the world, the release said. The 104th annual Florida State Fair will take place on Feb. 7-18, 2008 in Tampa. The Florida State Fair Authority organizes the event under the leadership of Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

A new Illinois law requires background checks on workers who operate amusement park and carnival rides. Governor Rod Blagojevich says the law is designed to protect children by preventing registered sex offenders and other convicted felons from operating rides. The law takes effect Tuesday. Starting then, carnival owners and operators have to conduct a criminal history records check and a sex offender registry check on potential employees. That means carnival owners and operators can't hire a carnival worker who has been convicted of rape, murder or other sexual offenses. Penalties range from $1,000 to $15,000. The Illinois Department of Labor is establishing training standards for carnival operators.

Have cavy, could win. The 61st annual Pasco County Fair in February will again open its rabbit show to the short-tailed rodents from South America, of which the guinea pig is the most recognized. The deadline for Pasco kindergartners through 12th-graders to enter that show, plus the poultry competition, is Jan 11. Each exhibitor can enter up to three rabbits or birds, but only one cavy. The fee is $2 per animal. Only breeds recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders and the American Poultry Breeders associations will be accepted. Students are to bring their entries and cages to the fairgrounds off State Road 52 from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 17. The shows start the next day and run through Feb. 24. All 4-H and FFA members and independent exhibitors must enter record books for competition. Versions for rabbits and poultry are available online at www.pascocountyfair.com.
