The 102nd annual Multnomah County Fair, now run entirely by volunteers with no assistance of any sort from Multnomah County, will return to Oaks Amusement Park on May 24 through May 26 — Memorial Day Weekend — from noon till 7 pm each day. And, as last year, there is no admission charge to enter the fair on the amusement park grounds, and no charge to park in the parking lots there, either.

The Curry County Fair Board of Directors are putting all their chips on number 2008 in an attempt to save the County Fair from going the way of the Tyrannosaurus rex. County fairs around the state of Oregon are feeling the heat of tight money, failed sponsorships, and lack of interest from the public. Even the humungous Oregon State Fair, with its thousands of exhibits, midway attraction rides and top name entertainers is struggling at the gate.

The Greenville Hospital System's Freedom Weekend Aloft has filled out its concert and event schedule for the Memorial Day Weekend hot-air balloon and concert festival to be held at Simpsonville's Heritage Park, May 24-26.

The Inland Empire Shows carnival will be in Fernley this week (May 2-4) at the Out-of-Town Park, which features numerous rides, games and attractions for the entire family.

New rides and revamped favorites greeted visitors to the Food Lion Apple Blossom Carnival, which opened on Tuesday evening. Worries about inclement weather created the most concern going into the day, but sunny skies and only a bit of wind greeted the carnival attendees. Charlie Belknap, director of public relations and marketing for Powers Great American Midways, the company presenting the carnival, said the set-up of rides, games, and food vendors had gone well. He said the new rides, including the Italian-made Vortex, are part of his company’s efforts to improve the entire experience for families.

Two women say that their free-speech rights were trampled when a county fair board barred them from marching in a Labor Day parade to protest pollution from a local plant. The women have filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Columbus seeking a ruling that the Washington County Fair Board, the sponsor of the Marietta parade, violated their constitutional rights. Ellyn Burnes of Athens and Florence Beidler of Marietta contend that the fair board approved the participation of their group, Neighbors for Clean Air, in the parade. But, the women allege, the day before the event, fair board officials said the group could not join the parade. A lawyer for the fair board denies any constitutional violations.
