The final day of the Stars & Stripes Festival in Mount Clemens started exactly the way the first two did: marred by gray clouds and a steady rain. Spam, and not the e-mail kind, has inspired songs, poetry contests and even a hit musical celebrating Hormel Foods Corp.'s trademarked, canned ham-based product. The 71-year-old economically priced Spam made fresh headlines this summer for enjoying double-digit sales at a time when other product-makers are taking a beating in this battered economy. On Saturday and Sunday, amateur chefs came to the San Diego County Fair to add gourmet status to the grocery store staple at the Great American Spam Championship at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Contestants Danielle Jaksa, 11, and Evan Jaksa, 8, of Carmel Valley, recently returned from a trip with their family to London, where they got their inspiration from seeing "Spamalot," the hit Monty Python-inspired musical.

Stained glass artist Gene Mallard of Stamford is one of five area artists and craftsmen who will show their work at the seventh annual American Crafts Festival at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City for the next two weekends. Other local craft artists chosen for the event include Barbara Riggs of Oneonta, who specializes in woven clothing; Ralph Stupple of Stamford, pottery; Dale Dapkins of Delhi, ceramics; and Randy Herold of Davenport Center, leather. The American Crafts Festival is organized by the American Concern for Art and Craftsmanship and is sponsored by Consolidated Edison. It is the largest and most comprehensive free exposition of American crafts in New York City.

Your article in the Tuesday paper about the Olmsted County Sheriff's Department giving out tickets and people being sent to court for smoking is ridiculous. I certainly understand nonsmokers not wanting to be by smoke and I believe there are a lot of considerate adult smokers out there not meaning anyone harm and get out of the way of people while smoking. Has anyone told the"carnies" yet? Who's going to run the show? I would hope the sheriff's department has more important things to do than to police smokers. I have also heard how backed up our courts are and we're doing this now? What has Rochester come to? Government needs to stay out of this. Have we lost ALL common sense? Shouldn't we be more concerned about violence and accidents in and around the city? I would sure hate to hear someone got hurt and couldn't get the help needed because the fair needed "smoker police." Sheila Haskin

the 158th Annual Marion County Fair begins today and runs through July 5. Candy Tripp, fair manager, said the grounds have been groomed, buildings readied, contracts for rides and entertainment have been signed. She expects a total of about 150 vendors both on the midway and inside the coliseum. A new venture this year is to have headline winning entertainment at least one night in the grandstand. The contemporary Country and Western band Whiskey Falls will perform 7:30 p.m. Friday in front of the grandstand. Opening for them at 6 p.m. will be Fogery Run, a local country and western band.

For Joe McCluskey, spending endless hours cooking for and serving guests of the Springdale Fireman's Jubilee for 36 consecutive years isn't a sacrifice. It's just the way it is. The current president of the Springdale Fire Department stays true to his long-term commitment to the community. McCluskey, 78, and his wife, Elizabeth, both attended Springdale Area High School, but moved to Plum after they were married. When they returned to Springdale Borough 14 years later, McCluskey decided to join the fire department. He had to wait a year because of residency requirements, but after that, there was no turning back
