Keri-Helen has never been one to back away from a tussle. And since Caleb-man has come along, her motherly instinct has kicked in and she is quick to jump to the defense of anyone who is being done wrong. The only blemish in our day at the Harvest festival was a Crazy Carny who decided to pick a fight with a single mom at the kiddie train. For some strange reason, perhaps too many funnel cakes or deep fried Twinkies, this poor lady did not realize she was bullying someone within ear shot of the most ruthless gang in all of Johnston County: The Clayton MOMs Club!

rrive at the Fair Grounds to care for the goats and for J and R to sing with the Sacred Heart Children's Choir. The Fair Grounds are a bit like a ghost town at this time of morning. The carnies are just starting to make their bleary way to their stands. The folks with livestock are dragging in to water, feed, and prep. Some of them are still wearing pajamas. They probably camped over night with their animals.

Saturday afternoon we found a carnival in town. Since the weather was pretty good we decided to go over and check it out. We thought it would be a good preview of what's to come when we travel to Disneyworld this week. Kiesha and her girls joined us and they took as much pleasure toting Avery around as they did riding the rides. Our little daredevil will try anything, she was great when we would put her on a ride but if it was something that we could not accompany her on she would get upset when the ride started to move.

Then comes the midway. The Carnies that work the midway look like this is the very last thing they want to be doing with their lives. It actually made us a little sad -- the ride and game operators appeared to be listless drifters with no joy for their work. Last summer we went to Disneyland and the contrast between the ride operators at Disney and the carnies couldn't be more extreme. Somehow no one ever pushed them to discover their gifts and their calling and now they are in a turn-key job without a sense of place -- moving from one small town to the next. The kids, of course, loved the midway, joyless carnival workers or not. I was just hoping that I was being a responsible parent and that I wouldn't end up on the evening news -- victim of a freak carnival accident.

As you head out to the Central Panhandle Fair in Bay County this week, you’ll certainly want to make sure you and your family will be safe on the many rides at this year’s fair.

Long before the gates open to the midway, all the rides go through maintience and safety inspections to make sure patrons will have a fun and safe experience. Fair rides inspectors with the Department of Agriculture are at the fairgrounds this week making sure the rides are safe.

Also, the Fair Company must perform daily inspections on their own to follow safety guidelines and document their findings to meet state statues.

If a ride were to fail an inspection, a stop operation order will be issued and the ride can’t operate until it’s removed by an inspector.

Attendance at this year's National Cattle Congress fair Sept. 18-21 was down slightly from last year but still strong, organizers reported. Doug Miller, NCC manager, said about 85,000 people came through the gates, down from about 90,000 in 2007.
