Nearly 400 exhibitors are scheduled to take part in the 2009 Montague County Youth Fair Jan. 8-10 at the Montague County Agricultural Center in Nocona.

When she was a child, Jamie Lubenko remembers accompanying her grandfather to the fair, running in and out of "the office," and always having a blast. It's part of the family, Lubenko said of the Amador County Fair. Lubenko is vice president of the newly formed Amador Fair Foundation. She fondly remembers her grandfather, Harold Colburn, and his dedication to the fair. He was a fair board member for several years, she said. This, Lubenko added, "absolutely influenced me."

OK, I can see that I’m getting off onto a tangent that could be a whole ‘nother blog about the Hubbard Homecoming, the carnies that took their lunch breaks in our front yard, the halter tops and hot pants that Lisa and I sewed up to wear to the Homecoming in 7th grade, and the guy we called the “Pusherman,” but I’m going to rein this in and go back to the rides thing.

With one well-worn, battered blue suitcase, James Kopel of Moline spent the past 11 years attending every state fair in the United States. By car and airplane, he figures he traveled about 80,000 miles -- about half by air -- and spent up to $40,000 to attend the official state fair in 41 states and the unofficial, but main event, in 11 others. Wearing his John Deere cap and walking shoes, and carrying a map of the fairgrounds, the affable, retired Black Hawk College professor traversed the fairgrounds, sampling the food and viewing the livestock shows, 4-H exhibits and commercial tents at each one. To say Kopel is an expert on state fairs is an understatement. He created a state fair evaluation form on his laptop computer, rating each state fair on 90 variables, including quality and affordability of food, cleanliness and accessibility of fairgrounds and exhibits, courteous office staff, variety of entertainment and educational experience.

Iowa State Fair directors re-elected

Six members were re-elected to the Iowa State Fair Board of Directors during the State Agricultural Convention held Dec. 5-7 in Des Moines. Each director has been re-elected to a two-year term. The members and their districts are: Jeanne Partlow, Manson and Ankeny (northwest); James Romer, Ames (north central); Paul Vaassen, Dubuque (northeast); Gary VanAernam, Exira (southwest); Jerry Parkin, Earlham (south central); and Gary McConnell, Bloomfield (southeast). Delegates from six geographic State Fair Board districts elect two board members each for a total of 12 directors. All terms are staggered two-year terms.
