At least 10 bands featuring county residents ages 16 to 26 have applied to perform on the Magic Carpet Stage on Feb. 12 for a chance to win $1,000. The deadline to apply is next week, contest organizers said Wednesday. “This is another way to bring something back to the community and showcase local teens,” said Veronica Helgeland, assistant fair marketing manager. The band competition is the latest addition confirmed for the upcoming county fair, which will also features rides, live entertainment, and a nightly musical pageant.

The annual Burnet County Fair and Rodeo next year will add the fair that has been absent for the past 10 years as an integral part of the program. Tommy Headrick, president of the Burnet County Fair and Rodeo Association, acknowledged that the fair is likely to return as part of the two-day event in 2010. The word fair has continued to be a part of the association’s title and in the title of the annual event, which is held each year on the second weekend of June. The 2010 dates are Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12. “The fair just kind of fell off several years ago,” Headrick said. “Not so much for a lack of interest as for a lack of knowledge of how to put it on.” The last time the fair was part of the event was 1998. “Over the years, several veterans who were critically involved in putting on the fair part of the event retired or moved on and it just kind of withered away,” Headrick said. The fair and rodeo association plans to partner with the Highland Lakes Master Gardeners organization, which will take a prominent role in running the fair portion of the event.

Carnivalwarehouse.com recently released its 2009 fair attendance figures, and the Wilson County Fair made the Top 50 North American Fairs list for 2009 once again. "Despite economic fears, North America's Top 50 events had a solid year," said Matt Cook, president of carnivalwarehouse.com. The Top 50 North American Fairs drew 40,316,926 guests in 2009, a decrease of less than 1 percent from 2008. In a year when economic woes were a major concern, it turned out that an old enemy, the weather, was the major challenge in 2009. The Illinois State Fair, Mississippi State Fair, Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition, California State Fair, Texas State Fair and Arizona State Fair all posted double-digit declines in 2009, largely because of weather. Twenty-nine of the top 50 fairs posted increases; leading the list for attendance increases was the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, Ca., which had a whopping increase of 21.5%, entering the list in the 41st position. The Wilson County Fair, which in 2009 celebrated "30 Years of Volunteers," first made the top 50 list in 2008. This year the Wilson County Fair climbs from 41st to 37th on the list. "While many fairs' attendance suffered due to extreme heat or rain, the weatherman treated Wilson County Fair visitors and volunteers to nearly perfect weather this year. We appreciate everyone who helped make 2009 another record-breaking year. We are already in the planning stage of the Aug. 13-21, 2010's, fair," Wilson County Fair President Hale Moss said.

Bothwell named event center director

The Clackamas County Fair Board has hired Canby resident Laurie Bothwell as the new director of the Clackamas County Event Center. Bothwell, a fair employee since 2002, served three years as the executive assistant to her predecessor, Rayven Davis, who held that job nine years. Bothwell has served as acting event center director since Davis resigned Sept. 18. The Clackamas County Fair Board received 30 applications for the director’s job from Oregon, California, Washington and Idaho, said Chairman Darrell Ricksger. Board members narrowed the field to four finalists who they interviewed before Christmas and made their decision to hire Bothwell Sunday, Ricksger said.
