College Announces Naming of Lobby in New Performing Arts Theatre

Auburn, NY (December 22, 2011) – Cayuga Community College is pleased to announce the naming of
the Joanne Foresman Lobby in the Schwartz Family Performing Arts Center. On December 21, 2011, the
Foresman family unveiled the gift to Joanne Foresman in a private ceremony. The family announced they
had made a gift to the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival to name the lobby to recognize Joanne
Foresman’s many contributions to the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse and the Auburn community.

Joanne first became involved with Auburn Children’s Theater (ACT) in the late 1960s. ACT was the
beginning of what is now the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse Youth Theatre, and Joanne dedicated countless
hours to performing in this program, which brought theatre to children in local schools. She served as the
Secretary for ACT and later as the President of the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse Board of Directors from
1978 to 1980. She co-chaired the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse’s 50th Year Anniversary celebration.

One Acts to TANYS from Auburn

Harlequin Productions of Cayuga Community College is pleased to announce that their production of "The Body Washer" by Rosemary Frisino Toohey has been invited to perform at the annual Theatre Association of NY State Festival.  This prestigious state-wide competition will be held Nov. 19-21 in Batavia, NY.  "The Body Washer" is part of Harlequin's We Got Your One-Acts, Right Here evening of theatre which continues performances on Nov 4-6 at 8PM at the College's Black Box Theatre.
"The Body Washer" features the talents of CCC students Lauren Maltese, Rachel Bodner and Lizzie Fennessy and tells of how an incident in the Afghanistan war affects the lives of an Islamic Body Washer and two Americans: a National Guard soldier and a journalist.
Also Invited to perform at the TANYS Festival is the Auburn Player's Production of "Two Women and a Chair" by Michael Olsen.  CCC freshman Alicia Frame and Alumna Carole Estabrook enact the two roles of actresses showing up for an audition in a room dominated by a strange chair but no director.
Both of these productions are directed by Bob Frame, Director of Theatre Operation at CCC.  His work has been featured at the festival many times over his career; in fact he was awarded the J. Richard Mahlstedt Directing Award in 2006. Frame is honored to have one play invited to perform, but it is practically unheard of to have two plays in this competition!  These plays were chosen from a field of over 60 production mounted by Community, College and High School Theatre Groups from throughout the State.  The TANYS Festival showcases some of the best work found in NY community theatre and is the first step in a theatrical completion that can lead to a national contest and ultimately to an international Festival held in Monaco.

Art in Motion

Art-in-Motion presents free citywide performance Sept. 11 to highlight neighborhood creativity

Open Hand Theater, Syracuse Stage, and Imagining America present a free spectacular performance on September 11th at 2:00 PM on the green in front of the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) in downtown Syracuse. Entitled “Art-in-Motion,” this giant puppet performance created about the City of Syracuse features the work of neighborhood activists, artists, and children from the Near West Side, the South Side, Eastwood, and the North Side. Artists as diverse as painter Juan Cruz, director Jose Miguel Hernandez, puppeteer Geoffrey Navias, and theatre artist/ clown Lauren Unbekant have worked with over 100 volunteers and children to create this remarkable city-wide performance as great entertainment for families and people of all ages.

With special guest appearances from local dignitaries such as Mayor Stephanie Miner and Syracuse University (SU) Associate Provost Kal Alston woven in, this production exemplifies how performance contributes to our shared community life.

Supported by SU’s Chancellor’s Leadership Project and the New York Council for the Humanities, Imagining America initiated the project partnering with Open Hand, Syracuse Stage, and the SU Office of the Arts Presenter. With strong commitments from the South Side Community Coalition, the Spanish Action League in the Near West Side, Open Hand Theater on the North Side, and Eastwood community organizers, Art-in-Motion is unprecedented in Syracuse in its role of arts participation to strengthen city neighborhoods, nurture creativity in the community, and build on the city's unique cultural heritage.

Leading up to this performance, Art-in-Motion has featured public conversations centered on activating the arts and stimulating urban redevelopment in Syracuse. On Friday September 10th at 5pm at the Warehouse, 350 W. Fayette Street in downtown Syracuse, the next in the series of conversations will feature Maria Rosario Jackson, senior researcher at the Urban Institute. This event is co-sponsored by CNYSpeaks.

According to Imagining America’s director Jan Cohen-Cruz, “Art in Motion provides a glimpse of what participatory art offers downtown revitalization. The process of creating the puppets and short scenes of neighborhood life has itself played a role in bringing residents together. Seeing a performance with people from all over the city who rarely if ever interact is valuable in itself. Add the pleasure of puppets and performance and I believe we are offering an experience that Syracuseans and visitors from outside the city may want to support as an annual event.”

On the following day, Sunday, Sept. 12, three experts in culture and urban neighborhoods, including Sandy Spieler, artistic director of In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre in Minneapolis, the Urban Institute's Maria Rosario Jackson, and Bill Aguado of the Bronx Council for the Arts, will come together for a public conversation at 2 p.m. at Syracuse University's Warehouse, 350 W. Fayette St. in downtown Syracuse. They will reflect on the prior day’s puppet performance and will explore ways of using the experience to further opportunities for creative expression and urban revitalization in Syracuse. These activities aim to explore and leverage elements of a truly creative city.

IA is a national consortium of more than 80 colleges and universities committed to public scholarship in the arts, humanities, and design. Syracuse University is host campus of IA until 2012.

Auburn, NY 1/22/2010 —The Board of Directors of The Auburn Players Community Theatre, Inc. are pleased to announce that Ted Davenport's "Romero and Miss Julie"  will open at the Irene A. BisgroveTheatre located at 17 Franklin Street in Auburn, NY. on Friday, February 12th at 8PM. Additional performances will be held on Saturday, February 13th at 8PM and Sunday, February 14th at 2PMA preview performance is available to critics only on Wednesday, February 10th at 7:30PM. This is the productions final dress performance and arrangements by critics and news media, only; may be made to attend by calling Tom Hoey at 315-750-8525 between the hours of Noon to 5PM EST, daily.

ROMERO AND MISS JULIE is an entirely new play  based on the story and characters from William Shakespears play Romero and Juliet, and is a romantic comedy. Nowhere does the device work better than in the casting of diminutive (4-foot-11) Indian-American actress Binaifer Dabu. When we first see her she’s a crying child with a shawl over her head. A few minutes later she’s transmogrified into a man (shades of Linda Hunt in The Year of Living Dangerously!). First it’s the servant Poole, a character that appears in Stevenson’s novella, although usually as a stolid Brit. Here, dressed in a dark morning coat and trousers, Poole also sports a white turban and speaks with a muted Indian accent. More men and more women and possibly a hermaphrodite will follow.
