Theater people and theater fans were gathered for a main character who was never going to show up. Except in spirit. The crowd was there on West 45th Street to pay tribute to Vincent Sardi Jr., the unofficial mayor of Broadway and the owner of Sardi’s, who died on Jan. 4 at 91.
